COURSES DESCRIPTION

ENGLISH 2237: GOTHIC STUDIES UK

ENGLISH 1181: HISTORY OF DRAMA AND THEATRE 1

These on-site survey courses will trace the history of the Gothic from its bloody theatrical roots in Classical drama through Medieval mystery plays, Renaissance revenge tragedy, and 18th and 19th century anxieties about mobs, foreigners, hubrids, women and self-control to 20th century fascination with ghosts, memory and atmosphere, and our current obsessions with the uncanny return of the past and the problems associated with ontological instability. Because the Gothic is inherently dramatic, offering English 1181 (History of Drama and Theatre 1) alongside English 2237 (Gothic Studies UK) will enrich the learning experience.

Prerequisites: At least one semester of first year, collegelevel English.
