Before leaving from Canada for Belgium in 2013, as an exchange student, I was offered the sage advice that nothing is “better or worse, just different.” I was encouraged to approach every situation with an open mind. Though I strived to do just that, I found myself comparing my host and home country. From the transportation to the food, Canada, in my mind had it all backwards. Upon returning to Canada after 11 months, I experienced reverse culture shock questioning and comparing everything between the two countries.

When I travelled to Switzerland for my second study abroad experience in 2015, I fe...

It is one week before my plane departs for Europe and yet the reality of it all has not hit me. I am one of those people that tends to procrastinate everything. I have done some organization for my trip but I have been procrastinating packing. Not only that but I also tend to be the type of person that avoids dealing with their emotions, if it’s possible. So that means that all the emotions of going away haven’t really hit me yet. I only just started to feel anxious, with that tightness in my chest the other day. I know this feeling will only grow in the days leading up to my flight.

This move to...

Walking through the wooded Großer Tiergarten in the heart of Berlin, it’s easy to forget where you are and the history of the city. The sounds of spring echo around you drown out the surrounding roadways. Birds chirping, squirrels scurrying, and the occasional dog barking creates an atmosphere of peacefulness.

Originally planted in the 17th century, the area was used as a hunting ground for diplomats and aristocrats; however, it is now a popular summer destination for both locals and tourists. During the Second World War and the subsequent bombing of Berlin by the Allied forces, t...

Study Abroad Destination: Lund, Sweden

I have been home for a few days now and it has been hard to get back into the routine of my daily life. I arrived around midnight so I am not being affected by jet leg, but I am experiencing a little bit of culture shock, or maybe it is reverse culture shock. Having to drive everywhere and sitting in traffic after three months of biking, training and walking is taking some time to get used to. I also had a stack of mail that I had to go through and deal with, along with tax papers, appointments and social requirements to attend. I am sure I will adjust, I am very happy to be home with my partner, my gui...

Study Abroad Destination: Lund, Sweden

Even though exams are next week, I still managed to take in a hockey game in Malmö this week. It was a great time and a different experience compared to watching the Canucks or Victoria Royals live. The fans chant, bang drums and sing songs the entire game. Another interesting part is that you cannot drink beer in your seat while watching the game. You can only have a beer on the concourse during the intermissions. I do not know if this is better or worse, but what I do know is that when the period ends, there is a mass exodus towards the concessions on the concourse. Malmö ended up winning 3-1, so the...

Study Abroad Destination: Lund, Sweden

Life here in Lund, Sweden, has been great. The campus is beautiful and the student body atmosphere is something I have never experienced. If you google Lund University, the first image you will see is of the university library. I have spent a lot of time in the attic of the library doing research and writing papers. It is pretty cool to sit in an environment where some of the books around you are from the 18th and 19th century. I can confidently say that old books have a very distinct smell. I would describe it as old, beaten down wet leather baking in the sun. Although, after a co...

Study Abroad Destination: Mexico

One week away from the Mexico Field School and I am not even remotely prepared for this trip. Sigh! Today we have our pre-departure meeting before we leave for our trip. So the plan (between now and May 3) is as follows: Pre-departure meeting with our trip leader- Ada; check instruments in clinic; sterilize and pack instruments that we need; pack everything we will need for the dental clinic in 8 suitcases; finish the pre-departure complete the course related to the field school and finish all my clinical requirements for the program before departure. Between midterms all this week and five finals exams next week, I hav...

Study Abroad Destination: Italy and London

I can’t believe that I am only one week away from embarking on a European excursion; this past month has been a whirlwind of both excitement and nervous anticipation, and with deadlines and departures rapidly approaching these feelings are only escalating. Although I feel comfortable travelling, this trip is going to be a new experience for me because this is my first visit to Europe as well as my first time taking part in a Field Study. The normal stress that I experience packing and preparing for a long trip is heightened by a fairly heavy load of readings and assignments that must be finished before the trip beg...

Waking up and starting out at the white snowflakes is one of the last things I expected to see in Southern France. Living just two blocks up from the Mediterranean, I had become accustomed to ocean storms, but snow was not in my forecast. This was also the worst day this could happen, as my roommates and I were renting a car and going on a road trip to Western Italy today.

We all yawned, shouldered our bags and climbed into our elevator built for one, but somehow can hold enough weight for three. Stumbling into the cold wind, we miserably Tetris packed our bags into the trunk of the car, ready t...

Since this is my second exchange what I did not expect was to get strongly affected by culture shock. This fact might of made it worse and also because I went traveling beforehand, I believe I experienced culture shock before most of the other exchange students around me and therefore felt more alone. I love traveling too and didn’t think I would get as depressed as I did about being away from home.

What I think really affected me was that was Melbourne in a way felt like home. English was the main language, people seemed similar (although a bit grumpier and with an accen...
