Study Abroad Destination: Ghana

After the many long flights and bus rides, I have finally settled and found my place within one of Ghana’s small communities, Frankadua. Our group of student nurses have been welcomed with smiles and open arms- a feeling that can only be described as coming together with old friends after a long period apart. My Western thought process and lifestyle has already been challenged immensely and I am reminded that there is no “right” way of living. However, I do think I would appreciate a cooler temperature at times.

I’ve had many different opportunities to learn and work so far. I have volunteered at the medical clinic where I was able to test people for malaria and HIV. I have helped make breakfast and lunch and serve it to the children at a daycare and a local school. I have rode on the back of a motorcycle into neighbouring communities to provide wound care to those in need. I have participated in a pop-up clinic at a local market where I monitored people's blood pressure and provided medical care. I have participated in a soccer game against the community’s women’s team as friends and family watched along the sidelines. I have learned how to wash my clothes and myself with a single bucket of water. But most importantly, I have learned how important it is to learn about global health and how people from different countries can learn from each other and support one another to bring about a positive change for all.

Frankadua is the definition of community and what it means to be there and support one another. I have met so many hard working and wonderful people. Many who have faced numerous challenges in life yet continue to work hard every day.

I have 6 days left of my medical field school experience and I look forward to everything that each day will bring.

Thanks for reading!
